MUSIC MAKERS: 2005 band directory
"You know how hard it is to make yourself known, no matter what you do," music writers Del Moon and Eddy Allman said in the introduction to the first directory. "In the case of making music for money," the pair continued, "it's doubly hard because there are so many bands vying for so few jobs. In the interest of helping to correct that situation, we offer a selective directory of local bands -- 'Baton Rouge bands from A to Z.' " Former Fun section editor Freda Yarbrough recalls that the idea for a directory of musicians sprang from staff writer Eddy Allman's discovery that Baton Rouge was crawling with more local bands than her fledgling entertainment section knew what to do with. Yarbrough and her tiny staff thought a directory of all those bands and solo acts, featuring descriptions and contact info, was a good way to give the many musicians coverage. Four years prior to the first Fun band list, Baton Rouge's defunct weekly, Gris Gris, published a directory containing 30 entries. Gris Gris, Moon and Allman wrote, published two more annual directories before ceasing publication. By the weekly's final directory, its list of music acts had grown to nearly 100 entries from throughout Louisiana. The premiere Fun band directory, published Aug. 15, 1980, included Archie Bell, a singer who'd moved to Baton Rouge following the 1979 breakup of his group, the Drells. Bell and the Drells were famous for their 1960s hit, "Tighten Up." The 1980 directory featured such area perennials as swamp pop-icon Van Broussard and Floyd Brown, who'd found success at regional country and adult-contemporary radio. This year's directory ranges from classic swamp-pop singer Lil' Alfred, a member of Cookie and the Cupcakes in the 1960s, and Baton Rouge's rising young Southern-rock band, the Benjy Davis Project. The Fun section's 25th anniversary directory contains 122 groups and solo acts from the Baton Rouge area and beyond. Like Louisiana music in general, the list is a great gumbo of styles, including blues, jazz, swamp pop, country, Cajun, zydeco, rock, reggae and Celtic music. Come hell or high water, the beat goes on in Louisiana.
